How to Shred Better on The Guitar: String Skipping Techniques

String skipping is one of the techniques in guitar playing that is intricate. It requires a lot of knowledge of music theory and picking techniques. Though difficult, it is a method that is great for getting a unique sound. It is also an alternative to traditional solo riffs, which come from the linear blues or nfl throwback jerseys diatonic scales. In the traditional style, several notes are played on adjacent strings or a single string, bringing out linear melodic passages or phrases. In a sense, the string skipping technique introduces larger intervals that are somewhat unusual but pleasing to the ears. It also creates more interest to the listening audience.
As the name implies, the string skipping technique skips adjacent strings when playing riffs or solos. This breaks the linear diatonic passages in a song. Practicing this method of playing requires persistence and strength of mind, so be patient and practice. A working knowledge in music theory, especially in tertiary harmony (triads), is very useful here because some arpeggios are used here as samples for this playing technique.
The following is a sample of a simple skipping lick ala Paul Gilbert:
C
D U D U D U D U
E|---12---8--------------------------8------||
B|------------------------------------------||
G|------------12---9--------9---12----------||
D|---------------------10-------------------||
A|------------------------------------------||
E|------------------------------------------||
The notes are counted in eights, meaning 2 notes per metronome click.
Of course, other techniques can be used, such as legato or cheap nfl jerseys economy picking. What is important here is to incorporate the technique into a current playing style.

The above exercise gives an idea how to skip strings. It's now time to expand the exercise into something more interesting. The following exercise is played over these chords: C-F-G. Using the same exercise pattern, an interesting string skipping run surfaces:
C
D U D U D U D U
E|---12---8--------------------------8------|
B|------------------------------------------|
G|------------12---9--------9---12----------|
D|---------------------10-------------------|
A|------------------------------------------|
E|------------------------------------------|
F
D U D U D U D U
E|---12---8--------------------------8------|
B|------------------------------------------|
G|------------12---9--------9---12----------|
D|---------------------10-------------------|
A|------------------------------------------|
E|------------------------------------------|
G
D U D U D U D U
E|---12---8--------------------------8------|
B|------------------------------------------|
G|------------12---9--------9---12----------|
D|---------------------10-------------------|
A|------------------------------------------|
E|------------------------------------------|
Do not give up when phrases gets challenging. The point here is to master the basic motion before moving on to harder skipping licks. Try to minimize or eliminate unnecessary movements so that picking accuracy is developed.
Using thick plectrums/picks when doing the string skipping technique since it helps to create a brighter sound. Also, the attack response time of a string when struck by a thick pick is faster.
