Miller would fight teammate Edgar
The subject of teammate vs. teammate, or training partners fighting in MMA has become one of the hottest topics of the day. With more and more fighters flocking to major camps all over the world, there are bound to be numerous situations where friends and teammates are football jerseys
forced to answer the question if they would fight each other.
The battle lines have been drawn with several fighters stating they would never, ever fight a teammate, while others have put it off until they are forced to answer the question when a fight is offered.
One person who has an interesting perspective on the subject is UFC lightweight Jim Miller, who fights Gleison Tibau at UFC Fight Night 22 on Sept. 15, and could be drawing closer and closer to a title shot with a win. Right now, if Miller were to get a title shot he would face off against friend and training partner Frankie Edgar, who currently holds the UFC lightweight title.
Miller admits that in the past he’s always taken a ‘wait and see’ approach, but he understands that MMA is a business, fights are competition, and it’s nothing personal to say you’d take the fight.
“Honestly, now that he’s got the title, I feel like such a (expletive) saying that I’d fight him, or that we’d fight, stuff like that. Back before he had (the title) it was like if our paths meet then we do it,” Miller told MMAWeekly Radio.
“You figure we fought before, we beat each other up in the room, so why not really get paid to do it?”
Edgar actually handed Miller his first career loss back in 2006, which was well before the time the two New Jersey natives began training with each other. While Miller says Edgar hasn’t been in the gym with him as much lately, he still considers the UFC champ a friend and good training partner.
“We don’t train together every day, we don’t train together that much anymore. The best thing for him was training for B.J. for eight months, and he’s totally reworked his schedule. He’s working with Phil Nurse now, and he gets into the city training at Renzo’s and stuff, so there really hasn’t been much time for the two of us to train together,” Miller commented.
Looking back at their fight from a few Dallas Cowboys jersey
years ago, Miller can still see glimpses of those two fighters competing in the UFC today, and even though they are much different and improved from that fight, he still sees it being a great match-up.
“It was a fun fight last time, we match up so well, that’s why we’re good training partners,” he said. “We push each other in every area, so if we fight again it will be a fast paced fight, and a hell of a (fight). One fans would be talking about.”
What Miller chalks the whole conversation up to is the fact that people need to look at MMA as a sport. When football teams play each other, friends are forced to strap on the pads and a defensive player isn’t going to hit his friend with any less force when he’s going for the game-winning touchdown.
The New Jersey based fighter said it’s the same concept for MMA. It’s nothing personal, it is just business.
“When you boil it down it’s a sport. We’re not gladiators battling to the death, there is no real animosity in most fights,” Miller stated. “Sometimes sure, sometimes guys just really don’t like each other, but most of the time we’re just competitors. We’re in there because we enjoy it and we like the taste of a win. Doesn’t matter who you’re fighting, you’re still going to go for it.”
The subject about a potential Miller vs. Edgar fight has to be talked about with the lightweight division currently under a state of renewal with a short list of possible contenders battling for the next top spot. Miller believes he’s right there, and is ready to face anyone Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
to prove it.
“It’s pretty cool to think about it, that I’m two wins away really from getting a shot at the title, so it’s exciting,” said Miller. “I’m definitely focused on my upcoming fight, but that’s in the back of my head.”
