Buzz: Latest from the NFL
For the first time in a while, the Dallas Cowboys will likely have their entire starting offensive line unit together when the team hosts the Chicago Bears on Sunday.
RT Marc Colombo (knee-probable) and RG Kyle Kosier (knee-probable) practiced nfl jerseys
all week and are slated to be back in the starting lineup.
However, head coach Wade Phillips indicated both players could see their backups getting some playing time in the game.
Colombo has not played since he had knee surgery in mid-August. When a knee becomes inactive for a prolonged period of time, it can get fatigued, so that’s what Colombo will be fighting against.
Kosier suffered an MCL sprain in a training camp practice in mid-August and has not played since then. The degree of sprain was not revealed by the team, but grade-2 MCL sprains can keep a player out from two to four weeks.
The Atlanta Falcons could be without starting SS Erik Coleman (knee-questionable) when the team takes on the Arizona Cardinals in the home opener.
Coleman did not practice at all this week with second-year S William Moore filling in for him.
Moore, a second-round pick last year, was highly touted coming out of the University of Missouri. Scouts liked his size and range. His rookie season was cut short due to a hamstring injury.
Coleman is signed through 2011, so Moore might have to wait a while to get a chance to start on a full-time basis.
The team will already be without starting WR Michael Jenkins (shoulder) for the second straight week.
When the Detroit Lions host the Philadelphia Eagles, they could be without a bunch of key starters on Sunday.
QB Matthew Stafford (shoulder-out) is expected to miss at least a few weeks. He’ll be replaced by journeyman QB Shaun Hill.
DE Cliff Avril (knee/finger-out) will be replaced by Turk McBride, who was selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the second-round of the 2007 NFL Draft. McBride was drafted as a defensive tackle, so it remains to be seen if he can provide any pass-rushing help. McBride has only posted 31/2 sacks in his career.
MLB DeAndre Levy (groin-questionable), who did not play in last week’s game against the Chicago Bears, has not gone through a full practice yet during the regular season. Last week’s replacement, veteran LB Landon Johnson, really is best used on the outside.
FS Louis Delmas (groin/finger-questionable) did not practice Friday, but the plan was to limit his practice time in order to give him a chance to play on Sunday. Detroit has next to no depth at either safety spot, so having Delmas in the lineup is essential for the team having a chance to win. Delmas is a real tone setter for the secondary.
Baltimore Ravens starting TE Todd Heap (shoulder-questionable) was limited again in Friday’s practice. The 10th year pro has been limited this week by a strained shoulder.
Because regular season practices are generally Saints jersey
non-contact, Heap probably won’t know for sure how his injured shoulder will hold up in game conditions. If Heap winds up being one of Baltimore’s eight inactives Sunday or is limited by his injury, keep an eye on rookie TE Ed Dickson, who was selected in third round. A personnel source said the offensive coaching staff believes Dickson has a chance to be more than the team’s starting tight of the future--he has drawn comparisons to former Baltimore TE Shannon Sharpe.
Dickson, in the eyes of some personnel evaluators, was the top vertical tight end available for this year’s draft.
Buffalo Bills starting ILB Paul Posluszny will miss Sunday’s game at the Green Bay Packers due to a sprained knee. While the exact injury isn’t known, head coach Chan Gailey said the fourth-year pro would miss probably two to three weeks. Gailey added the team dodged a bullet with the injury because the original fear was that Posluszny could miss significant playing time.
Fifth-year LB Keith Ellison is expected to start with veteran LB Akin Ayodele backing him up. Not having Posluszny against Green Bay could be problematic for the defense. Ellison is an undersized linebacker and Green Bay has a physical running game. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Ayodele, who weighs around 15 more pounds than Ellison, see more snaps than expected in this game.
For the second straight week, the playing status for second-year RB Chris “Beanie” Wells (knee) is up in the air. Wells, who is listed as questionable, was limited again in Friday’s practice.
Coaches typically do not like to play younger players who don’t practice much during the week.
Wells will have to show that he’s ready to go in pregame warmups in order to get the green light to play against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
If Wells misses his second straight game, RBs Jason Wright and La’Rod Stephens-Howling will back up starter Tim Hightower. Stephens-Howling gives the team some badly needed speed for their running game.
Minnesota Vikings receiver Percy Harvin returned to practice on Friday and laughed at the suggestion his bruised hip might keep him out of Sunday's home game against the Miami Dolphins.
Coach Brad Childress said the team would make ''a game-time decision'' on Harvin, who was limited in practice on Friday and listed as questionable on the injury report.
''He is the coach,'' Harvin said, grinning. ''I feel fine, so I guess we'll see pregame then.''
The reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Harvin said he first felt something in the hip during Monday's practice. He was limited on Wednesday and received ''a lot of treatment'' while sitting out practice Thursday.
''A lot of sprinters just know, when you kind of get that pull, you kind of just ease up little bit,'' Harvin said. ''It was just one of them, so coach just wanted to take (Thursday) as a precaution, but I feel fine.''
Childress said the team would re-evaluate Harvin on Sunday morning and could sign receiver Logan Payne off the practice squad if Harvin can't play. The Vikings only have four receivers on the roster.
Cornerbacks Cedric Griffin and Chris Cook and backup defensive tackle Jimmy Kennedy also were listed as questionable - all with knee injuries.
Left tackle Bryant McKinnie (finger), quarterback San Diego Chargers jersey
Brett Favre (ankle/back), running back Toby Gerhart (knee) and center John Sullivan (calf) fully participated throughout the week and were listed as probable.
Also Friday, right tackle Phil Loadholt was fined $10,000 for two unnecessary roughness violations in the Vikings' Sept. 9 loss at New Orleans, an NFL spokesman said. Loadholt ''grabbed his opponent by the facemask in an attempt to block him on pass plays in the second and fourth quarter.''
